TenCate Geosynthetics provided TenCate Polyfelt® PGM-G 100/100 for the rehabilitation of several main roads in England. According to the key performance indicators of the following 5 years, the road shows no signs of reflective cracking.

The A617 Millennium Way, a road in Nottinghamshire County (England), which was opened in the year 2000, featured cracks and surface damage after 15 years of use and therefore had to be renovated. Asphalt Grid Systems Limited proposed PGM-G100/100 a cost-efficient and technically excellent solution.

Missing adhesion between layersbefore treatment

Reconstructed road with increase in lifetime

Core samples had shown that the structural integrity of the bituminous layers was good. However, the high modulus base (200 mm thick), the binder course (60 mm) and the SMA surface course (40 mm) were found to have insufficient adhesion. Obviously, the missing layer bonding had caused the damage in the surface layer.

„We were able to efficiently rehabilitate the roads, improve their technical quality and increase their lifetime with our high-strength, glass fiber reinforced composite.“

Multi-functional asphalt interlayer for crack-retardation

Due to previous experience and success in Nottinghamshire, the contractor proposed TenCate Polyfelt® PGM G-100/100. Additionally, the proposed binder course, ultilayer 20, and the surface course layer, ultipave D, would utilize polymer modified binders to provide a highly flexible road surface.

TenCate’s supply and installation contractor, Asphalt Grid Systems Ltd., deployed their fast fit system to carry out the operation with speed and efficiency. The project was completed 3 days ahead of schedule.

Most cost-efficient and technically perfect solution

TenCate Polyfelt® PGM-G 100/100 proved itself to be the most cost effective and technically sound solution, providing a significant increase in lifetime. The asphalt interlayer installed, TenCate Polyfelt® PGM-G 100/100, unites several benefits within one product, providing crack retardation, sealing function and stress absorption.

The product consists of a continuous filament mechanically bonded non-woven, which is reinforced by high strength glass filaments. The installation in the bituminous tack coat prevents the ingress of water and oxygen into the lower layers.

At the same time, it reinforces the new asphalt layers. As a result of these characteristics, this solution is perfect for the economic rehabilitation of cracked roads.

Asphalt interlayers for numerous roads in England

Polyfelt® PGM-G from TenCate Geosynthetics has already proven to be successful in the renovation of numerous roads within the Nottinghamshire region:

  • A617 Millennium Way Rainworth (12,000 m², 2015)
  • Westdale Lane, Carlton (2,100 m², 2016)
  • Cromwell Street, Carlton (700 m², 2018)
  • Rugby Road West Bridgford (6,300 m², 2018)
  • Bingham Road Langar (6,300 m², 2018)
  • A38 Mansfield Notts (40,000 m², 2018)

After carrying out these renovations, all of these roads are now in an excellent and technically stable condition.
